VIDEOS: Paintings Tour Their World

When I finish a painting, after giving it time to dry, after applying a protective coat of varnish, I like to take it out to a favorite location for an afternoon and document its completion on video. We go on a day trip to an environment that originally inspired some aspect of the painting.
One example is the California Swim series. One of my favorite spots to film those paintings is at Hendry’s Beach on the south-facing Santa Barbara coastline.

For one afternoon, the painting lives in the light and atmosphere that shaped the idea at the root of the work. It’s a small ritual I like—a goodbye before they leave for a collection somewhere else on earth. Perhaps I’m being sentimental. Am I a Contemporary Conceptual Sentimental artist? Maybe.

Inspiration. Craft. Celebration. The painting meets the landscape that inspired its creation and an art moment is recorded. Art is Life. Life is Art.
